Not Going to Halifax

January 20th, 2007 at 10:22

I am in YYT, where incoming flights to St. John’s can’t land and outgoing flights (including my own) are cancelled. Winds in the area are incredible. Indeed, they are gales.

And that’s why what I did this morning is no doubt the stupidest thing I’ve ever done in my life. But I will get to tell about it for the rest of that life. Here are the photos:

Those are photos of Cape Spear, Newfoundland, the furthest east you can go and still stand on solid North American ground. I walked out to the point in what were far and away the fiercest gales I’ve ever even looked at, much less been outside in. Every year folks are swept to their watery deaths from this point in less ferocious winds. I was lifted off the ground, my arms gripping for life onto the rail, just before taking these two quick photos.

So, perhaps I won’t get to Halifax until tomorrow. But I’ll be alive when I get there, which will be fun.

I salute your brazen quest for awesomeness, sir. I only wish you could have gotten a picture of a boat flying by or something.
