English Only
February 26th, 2007 at 20:04S. 1172 showed up in the Idaho Senate today. It is the second attempt to make English Idaho’s official language (S. 1469 in 2002, which died in committee, was the first). This year’s version, co-sponsored by 18 Republican members of Idaho’s 105-member legislature, would require all government meetings and transactions to be solely in English and would have all non-English-speaking children and adults in Idaho “become able to read, write and understand English as quickly as possible.” A recent poll suggests that about 77% of Idaho residents support making English the official language in Idaho. Note, too, H. 112, which would allow Idaho insurers to advertise in non-English languages but provide policies only in English.
